NotebookLM is Google’s AI research notebook. You add your own sources, such as PDFs, documents and web pages, and it answers questions and creates summaries using only what you gave it, with citations back to the source.
It also turns a notebook into other formats, including Audio Overviews, a podcast-style discussion of your material, and Video Overviews. It is popular with students, researchers and anyone who has to get through a pile of documents.
Create a notebook and add your sources. Each source can be up to 500,000 words or 200MB.
Ask questions in chat. Answers are grounded in your sources and point back to where they came from.
Generate summaries, study aids, and Audio or Video Overviews from the same sources.
Higher usage limits and more notebooks come with paid Google AI plans.
Pros
Answers stay tied to your own documents, which makes them easier to check.
Audio and Video Overviews are available on the free plan.
The free plan reportedly allows up to 100 notebooks and 50 sources per notebook.
Cons
It only knows what you upload, so it is not a general assistant.
Higher limits are tied to paid Google AI plans, not a separate subscription.
Limits and plan names have been changing, so check Google’s current plan details.
